Decided to fix it myself; took the rod to our local hardware store & picked up a metal nut that fit. This past Christmas I received this as a gift & used it twice before the plastic nut broke into three pieces. I thought about contacting the company for a replacement but after reading review after review regarding the same problem figured that the replaced nut would also crack. Its been almost a year now & no further problems. Bodum either needs to respond promptly to customers when parts break or rethink the design of their whisk mechanism so they can provide a serviceable product that will not give the consumer a headache.
Bodum made a real piece of junk here. Amazon was kind enough to offer to take one of them back, but I'm stuck with the other one. The nut on the bottom broke on BOTH the ones I bought, and Bodum won't replace either one. Their customer service is SHOCKINGLY bad. If you buy this you are getting ripped off and you will be able to use it once or twice before it breaks. That's a couple of expensive cups of drinkable chocolate.
It's large enough to carry drinks for 4-5 people, is made of GLASS, (and heat-retaining, Bodum glass at that), and has a pleasant appearance at the table. THIS BODUM CHOCOLATIERE GLASS CHOCOLATE MAKER / FROTHER does not froth too well. The "propeller" insert does try -- but it's not powerful enough to give the nice, high froth that's usually wanted. That said, the caraf itself is quite nice. It is also quite easy to clean. The Bodum glass, however, is very delicate, and extra care must be taken, when using and cleaning it.So, if you want a GLASS caraf, (not plastic, or Tupperware plastic, or stainless steel or aluminum), and can find no other one that's this large, or easy-to-clean, and don't mind the extra care that has to be taken with this admittedly thin and delicate glass, do buy one.P.S.: ANOTHER POSSIBLE USEIf you have no other purpose for it, you can even use it as a FISH-BOWL.Unlike most fish-bowls, this one will come with a handle, for easy transport -- and you can look at your fish, close-up, whenever you choose.Just be careful to replace the cover of the caraf with one that has cut-outs, and will allow extra air to come through, and/or leave the top open, and, of course, under NO circustances, use the "propeller" while the fish are in the bowl.
All you need is a pot to heat the milk and whisk to stir in the chocolate powder or solids. This product was thought up by people in the Bodum marketing department trying to come up with a gift idea -- who wouldn't want a hot chocolate maker as a gift. The problem, is that making hot chocolate is very simple. This product is at best a serving piece. Do not buy.
This absolutely would have been a fantastic product if hadn't broken the second time I used it. Although it can be put in the dishwasher, I washed it by hand before and after the first use. When I used it for the second time, though, the plastic piece at the end of the mixing mechanism broke into thirds, rendering it unusable.I also agree with the other comments about the frothing qualities - there is NO WAY you're going to get foam like in the picture unless you're adding dishwashing detergent to your hot chocolate.Fantastic idea from an otherwise fantastic company, but this time, sadly disappointing.
